Three Short Films From Greece’s Greatest Gay Filmmaker.
Three short films by one of Greece’s finest filmmakers. Constantine Giannaris has gone on to prove himself as a powerful director in features such as “From the Edge of the City” and “3 Steps to Heaven,” but before them came his short films. Each short is preceded by an introduction by the filmmaker. “Caught Looking” is about gay men’s sexual fantasies. Based around a computer program that allows the user to become part of the landscape it gives a new meaning to the word “virtual.” The film is sexy, comic and subversive. 1991 35min “North of Vortex” is a studied road movie about a bisexual poet, two hitchhikers and the American landscape. Shot in black and white is shows off our nation in a way no filmmaker from here ever could. It also has two of the hottest men you have ever seen. 1991 55min “A Place in the Sun” has a bored 35 year old Greek man falling in love with an 18 year old Albanian boy. The two share little in common except their boredom and the only way they both know to relieve it, sex. 1994 45mins

A Love Story With A Subversive Spark
Although surrounded by pumped up muscle boys at the gay disco, Harry (John Hannah) is alone. The odd shaped birthmark on his face sees to that. In the dark room he finds the touch of other men but once the lights come up, again he is alone. Driven to the point of madness, Harry contemplates suicide. He drives to England’s north shore and there, breaks down, both physically and mentally. Then one day, while walking along the beach he comes across an overturned bucket. When he kicks it he discovers it is not empty at all, beneath it is a head. Buried to his neck and comatose is Flint (Bernard Hill), a strange and enigmatic man whom Harry nurses back to health. These two men begin an odd yet rewarding relationship that proves at least one thing, that all of use can find someone we can trust, someone that we need and someone we can love.

When it was released in 1978, “Nighthawks” was billed as the first film from the United Kingdom to deal with gay life in a positive light. Viewed almost 30 years later it is a time capsule from a time that does not seem all that different from today.
Jim, a seemingly average teacher in a comprehensive school, lives the classic double life: nights in the gay bars and discos, days in school – and in the closet. With each new acquaintance the same tensions arise, does he venture beyond his current life style, who does he tell the truth to, and is there anything more to gay life than the one night stand?
His worlds collide when he’s confronted by his students. Asked if he is “bent” Jim does not retreat to the closet but gives the boys a resounding lesson in tolerance that still reverberates today.

Martin (Jurgen Prochnow) has been sent to jail for having had sex with a minor. While there he meets 15 year old Thomas (Ernst Hannawald),
the son of one of the prison staff. Thomas immediately develops a deep
crush on Martin. The two men find and share their mutual passion behind
the locked door of Martin's cell. Once released, the two move in
together and attempt to start a new life. But society will not let
them. Harassed at every turn; Martin is fired from jobs, Thomas is sent
to reform school; the two never again find the peace and happiness they
found behind bars.
Startling for it open and honest depiction of gay romance, this classic
from 1977 is one of the earliest gay films to come out of Europe. In an
interesting twist the film's director is Wolfgang Petersen, the world renown film maker who would go on to make Hollywood staples such as Das Boat, In the Line of Fire and Air Force One.

| Prince in Hell |
|
Set in
post-reunification Berlin, Jockel and Stefan attempt love but find that
drugs and jealousy stand in the way. The film's rough and tumble world
contains the vanishing elements of a once strong counterculture; the
brutality of junkie street life, SM sex in abandoned cellars, heroin
addictions, excessive partying, fist fights in drag queen bars and the
ever present threat of Neo-Nazi street thugs.
The film is rhythmically guided by a hand puppet play summarizing
and commenting on the state affairs between Jockel and Stefan and their
lives at the trailer camp they inhabit.
Michael Stock’s “Prince in Hell” is
a film about junkie life that reflects the troubles of a reunified
Germany and how youths, either gay or straight, have trouble adapting
to a new way of surviving.
